Wintry mix arrives overnight as Long Islanders dig out
Long Island dug out Tuesday after a historic storm dumped as much as 30 inches of snow on parts of the region, with road crews and residents alike clearing roads or front yards and the LIRR resuming regular service.
Long Islanders might see snow move in overnight into Wednesday and potentially mix with rain once the sun comes up, with about a half inch of snow on the South Fork and an inch in most other places, National Weather Service meteorologist Brian Ciemnecki said.
Sunshine is in the forecast for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with daytime highs near 40 degrees.
The storm was a fatal one for some.
Six people on Long Island — three in Suffolk and three in Nassau — died while outdoors Monday during the storm, spokespeople for both counties told Newsday. Two of the people who died in Suffolk were shoveling snow at time, said county spokesperson Mike Martino, In Nassau, the three people who died were also shoveling, according to county spokesperson Chris Boyle, adding that their deaths were all heart-related.
