WM's Anselmini sets national record

Ward Melville senior Mary Beth Anselmini broke a national record in the girls 2,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 6:33.01, Saturday at the Suffolk individual championship and state qualifier at Port Jefferson High School.

Anselmini broke the previous record of 6:33.70, set by Shelby Greaney of Suffren, N.Y., in 2008. She also bested her personal time of 6:42.00, she said.

"I'm over the moon," Anselmini said. "I didn't think this would happen today. My coach told me today that amazing races happen when you least expect it.
