A wealthy couple's secret life of drugs

LONDON -- When Eva Rausing went to the U.S. Embassy in Grosvenor Square four years ago to deal with a routine passport matter, the wealthy American tried to pass through an airport-style scan with small amounts of crack, heroin and a banned stimulant in her purse.

Her arrest led police to search the multimillion-dollar property she shared with her husband, Tetra Pak heir Hans Kristian Rausing. More drugs were found, including a sizable amount of cocaine.

Charges were dropped in exchange for a police warning, but what close family and friends already knew became public. The golden couple, with untold riches, were deeply mired in drug addiction even as they gave millions to anti-addiction charities.

Their sad tale reached its climax this week when Eva Rausing, 48, was found dead at home. Her husband was arrested for questioning. The cause of death has not been established. -- AP
