Ghanaian authorities intend to extradite a suspect in the slayings of a British actress and her two young sons in London, a senior police official said Sunday.
Arthur Simpson-Kent, 48, who was the boyfriend of former "EastEnders" actress Sian Blake, was arrested Saturday in western Ghana.
Simpson-Kent was "smoked from a thicket near Butre where he was hiding," said Prosper Agblor, director general of the criminal investigations department.
"He was armed with a knife. He was disarmed and arrested."
Video footage showed Simpson-Kent being led through a police complex with his hands cuffed behind him. Britain hasn't formally requested Simpson-Kent's extradition, but authorities plan to make an application soon.
Simpson-Kent had disappeared after speaking to British detectives on Dec. 16 following the killings of Blake, 8-year-old Zachary and 4-year-old Amon, who had last been seen three days earlier. The 43-year-old Blake had appeared in the long-running soap opera "EastEnders" in 1996-1997.
An investigation determined that Simpson-Kent arrived in Ghana on Dec. 19, Agblor said, but that the suspect had written down Dec. 7 on a disembarkation form as the day he entered the country.
A team of British detectives has flown to Ghana and a British police statement said that an extradition request would be made in "due course."
"I would like to pass on my extreme thanks to the Ghanaian police for their valuable assistance in this matter," Detective Chief Inspector Graeme Gwyn said.
