Bad blood between Jimenez, Tulowitzki
Cleveland pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez nailed former teammate Troy Tulowitzki in the elbow Sunday, carrying their feud onto the field and causing the Indians and Colorado Rockies to clear the benches in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Tulowitzki left the exhibition game after being hit in the left elbow by Jimenez's first pitch. The Rockies star was taken to a hospital for precautionary X-rays, which were negative.
Jimenez sprang off the mound after hitting Tulowitzki in the first inning, motioning toward him. The benches emptied, but there were no ejections.
Jimenez recently told The Denver Post that he was upset he didn't receive a contract extension while Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez got new deals. Jimenez was traded by Colorado to the Indians last summer.
Tulowitzki was quoted in the same story as basically saying Jimenez needs to get over his frustration and get on with his career.
Exam for Boston's Bailey
Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said closer Andrew Bailey will travel to Boston Monday to have his right thumb examined. Bailey, who was acquired in a December trade with the Athletics, has not pitched in a major-league game since March 25. He pitched 1 2/3 innings in a minor-league game Wednesday.
Bailey was delayed at the start of spring training because of a strained lat suffered during the vertical leap portion of his entrance physical. In addition to the minor-league outing, he has pitched six innings in six Grapefruit League games this spring, going 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA.
Earlier in the day, Valentine announced the final two spots in the rotation will be filled by lefthander Felix Doubront and righthander Daniel Bard. They will join Jon Lester, Josh Beckett and Clay Buchholz. Former Yankee Alfredo Aceves, who was also vying for one of the rotation spots, will go to the bullpen.
Around the leagues
The Reds traded third baseman Juan Francisco to the Braves for righthander J.J. Hoover. The 24-year-old Francisco was competing with Todd Frazier to back up Scott Rolen. Francisco was signed by the Reds in 2004 and was out of minor-league options . . . The Rays' Desmond Jennings hit three home runs, including a grand slam, in a win over the Orioles in Sarasota, Fla. Jennings connected twice off Wei-Yin Chen and added a solo shot off Kevin Gregg in the seventh. He had six RBIs total. Before yesterday, Jennings had no homers and one RBI in 42 at-bats. -- AP
