Mets outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis to miss rest of season, Jeremy Hefner's wife give birth

General manager Sandy Alderson said outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis (partial torn plantar fascia) will not play again this season. Nieuwenhuis, who will not need surgery, had been attempting to return to Triple-A Buffalo by working out in Port St. Lucie, but he was deemed not ready . . . Jeremy Hefner’s wife Sarah gave birth to their second child, a daughter named Jaylee. Hefner is on paternity leave.
