Alderson could be named Mets GM on Friday
The Mets completed their last interview Tuesday for the general manager's job, meeting for a second time with Sandy Alderson, who has been the favorite from the start and is likely to be introduced as the next GM as early as Friday.
The team has provided no official timetable for the hiring, but the two finalists were interviewed this week - Josh Byrnes on Monday - and there is no indication that any more candidates will be included at this point.
Chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon acknowledged yesterday's interview, which also included principal owner Fred Wilpon and president Saul Katz, but did not reveal any other details about the meeting with Alderson. Only that the Mets are preparing to make the decision.
"We will have no further comment on the process until we are ready to announce our new general manager," Jeff Wilpon said Tuesday in a statement.
The Mets would not be prevented from having a news conference Friday - a day off for the World Series - despite Major League Baseball's preference for waiting until after their premier event is over.
Earlier in the search, Jeff Wilpon suggested that the Mets would have a GM in place by the end of the Fall Classic, which could run as long as Nov. 4. But things moved quickly after the first round of interviews with the six candidates.
