The Subway Series means more to the Mets than the Yankees and it has nothing to do with the fans’ sense of bragging rights. It has all to do with a last place team trying to beat any team on its schedule. It has to do with quieting—if that is at all possible—the Jerry Manuel watch. It has to do with flawed stars like David Wright and Jose Reyes taking ownership in their own ballpark.

These games are more about immediate survival for the Mets. Winning two-of-three, or even sweeping the Yankees would lower the volume a bit on the many woes they have encountered over the first six weeks. Take away some of their eight game winning streak (doesn’t it seem ages ago) and the Mets would be no better off than Houston, Cleveland, Seattle or Baltimore.
