R.A. Dickey surprised by slow pace of negotiations

Judging by the words of general manager Sandy Alderson, Mets pitcher R.A. Dickey expected contract talks to move quickly. Instead, the reigning Cy Young Award winner said Tuesday he's surprised by the slow pace of the negotiations.
He likened the status of his talks with those of teammate David Wright, who is also far from agreement with the Mets.
While the Mets have made a contract offer and Dickey has countered, the sides aren't close to a deal that will keep him with the Mets past 2013.
Asked if he thought negotiations were headed in the right direction, Dickey said talks haven't progressed far enough along to gauge the situation.
"I'm not sure," said Dickey, who was speaking to students at the DREAM Charter School in Harlem.
Dickey emphasized he has no intentions to negotiate during the season.
Last week, Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon said that if deals aren't reached, he'd rather have Dickey and Wright play out their contracts instead of trading them.
"Hopefully, that's not the case," Dickey said. "That would be sad."
