Roster pruning: Mets trade Elvin Ramirez to Angels

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The Mets traded righthander reliever Elvin Ramirez to the Angels for cash considerations, the club announced on Wednesday, which brings the number of players on the 40-man roster to 38. The Mets may need to clear anywhere form one to three more spots to add non-roster players expected to make the team.
LaTroy Hawkins has already been informed that he'll make the club. Fellow reliever Scott Atchison is a lock along with outfielder Marlon Byrd. Utilityman Omar Quintanilla also appears in line to win a job.
Meanwhile, if Shaun Marcum isn't ready to begin the season with the Mets, Aaron Laffey would need to be added. The Mets view Laffey as the top candidate to step into the starting rotation in needed.
Ramirez, 25, went 0-1 with a 5.48 ERA in 25 appearances with the Mets last season. He also went 3-1 with a 2.36 ERA with Triple-A Buffalo.
