The Mets' GM search, the Yankees' lineup and the Arlington weather

Well, let's start with the weather. The forecast has turned worse in the last few hours. It seems that a delay, at the least, is possible. If the delay lasts long enough - let's say 90 minutes - then both teams could face tough questions about bringing back their starting pitcher. And depending on the inning, to whom to they turn at that point?

Stay tuned. To the weather forecast, that is. The Rangers probably wouldn't pitch Cliff Lee in Game 6 if tonight's game gets postponed altogether, but I think a flat-out postponement is a long shot right now.

--The Mets announced Sandy Alderson and Josh Byrnes as the finalists for their GM opening. Alderson remains the prohibitive favorite, but as I've written here in the past, I think Byrnes is an extremely bright executive who will look better, as time proceeds, for the job he did in Arizona.

So really, the Mets have put themselves in a no-lose situation. Although I'd be surprised if Byrnes got the job not only because of Alderson's reputation, but also because it might be a hard public-relations sell for the Mets to appoint someone who just got fired this past season.

--With the Rangers starting right-hander Colby Lewis, the Yankees are starting Marcus Thames at DH. Thames hit righties quite well this year - .347 OBP/.549 SLG/.896 OPS - but as Joel Sherman pointed out on Twitter, Thames has 14 hits in his last 60 at-batss against right-handers, with no walks and 15 strikeouts. For his career, he's .296-.480-.775 against righties.

Joel suggested benching Thames and saving him as a pinch-hitter against one of the Rangers' four lefty relievers, and starting Francisco Cervelli and switching Jorge Posada to DH. Made sense to me. So I asked Joe Girardi about it.

"Jorge has caught almost every one of Phil (Hughes') starts, and Marcus has had some big at-bats off right-handers for us this year, too," Girardi said.
