TAMPA, Fla. - Outfielder Randy Winn made his first appearance in Yankees gear yesterday, working out with Derek Jeter and others at the club's minor-league complex.

When asked about the .184 on-base percentage and .200 slugging percentage he put up against lefthanded pitching last year, the 35-year-old switch hitter displayed brutal honesty.

"I was horrible. I was terrible," Winn said. "There's no two ways about it. It was a bad year . . . I worked hard this offseason to get back to where I was for the majority of my career."

Winn has a career .332 OBP and .426 SLG against lefties, and the Yankees signed him with the idea that he could be a righty-hitting complement to Brett Gardner in the outfield.

"At this point, I have no idea what my role is going to be," Winn said. "I think I fit in well here. I think my strength [is] my versatility. I'm able to play all three outfield positions . . . I've hit everywhere besides fourth."
