Yankees' Andrew Benintendi injures wrist during at-bat against Rays
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Yankees leftfielder Andrew Benintendi left Friday night’s game against the Rays in the top of the third inning with an injury to his right wrist.
Benintendi, batting against lefthander Jeffrey Springs with two runners on and one out, appeared to hurt himself swinging and missing on the first pitch of his plate appearance, a slider. Benintendi shook his right hand in apparent discomfort and soon thereafter was led off the field by manager Aaron Boone and a trainer. The Yankees said Benintendi would undergo X-rays on the wrist.
The lefty-swinging Benintendi, acquired just before the trade deadline from the Royals, doubled in his first at-bat of the night but was stranded at second. He came into the night hitting .239 with two homers and a .699 OPS in 32 games as a Yankee. Benintendi, replaced in the lineup by rookie Oswaldo Cabrera, entered the night in a 4-for-24 (.167) slide.
