Didi Gregorius could return this weekend for Yankees vs. Red Sox

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Didi Gregorius’ season seemed all but over Sunday when the Yankees disclosed he suffered torn cartilage in his right wrist on Saturday.

But after being evaluated by a hand specialist on Wednesday, the shortstop received medical clearance to resume full baseball activities, the completion of a somewhat remarkable turnaround that could have him back in the lineup at some point this weekend in Boston.

“I was able to hit and throw and everything,” Gregorius said Wednesday after hitting inside and taking grounders on the field.

Asked if he felt limited doing any of those activities, Gregorius said: “Not at all.”

When does he want to play?

“As soon as they let me play, I’ll be in there,” Gregorius smiled.

Not surprisingly, Aaron Boone, while encouraged, took a more cautionary tone.

“I probably don’t allow myself to go there yet,” Boone said of figuring on a definite Gregorius return. “I just want to get through this day and continue to see what the doctors are saying. Certainly since the first day, he’s come in upbeat and optimistic, and that’s been really good to see and we continue to get pretty good news each day. But I temper it until we know we’re out of the woods and he’s able to go. We’ll see.”

Another day for Gleyber

Boone decided to give Gleyber Torres, who was experiencing tightness in his right hip area Tuesday, a second straight day off but planned on the rookie playing Thursday.

“No tightness in there at all today,” Boone said. “I just think it’s the smart thing to do to really stay ahead of this.”

Hicks set for Fenway

Aaron Hicks, who left Monday’s game with a tight left hamstring, won’t play the rest of this series but that’s primarily because Boone wants to keep him off the hard turf here. Hicks hit indoors Wednesday and went through agility work with no issues. He should return for the regular season-ending series in Boston.

“Everything felt great,” Hicks said. “I’ll play on Friday.”
