Getting ahead of ourselves to be sure, but if the Yankees win the next two games from Tampa Bay, the division title would be nearly a lock.

With nine games left after tomorrow's fourth straight game with the Rays, a 5-4 record by the Yanks would  force Tampa Bay to win its last 10 games for both teams to finish at 99-63. That would still not be enough for the Rays, as the Yankees would capture the division by virtue of winning the season series (10 of 18 games) with Tampa.

Starting Friday, the Yanks host the Red Sox for three games, then go to Toronto and Boston to close out the regular season. The Rays are home to Seattle and Baltimore and finish with four games at Kansas City.

Again, this is only operative if the Yanks win tonight and Thursday.  Check back for the changing math.
