The next significant step in Andy Pettitte's rehab likely will take place in Trenton.

Pettitte, who felt only a little soreness - which he said was normal - a day after going through an intense simulated game Saturday, said he is ready for his first rehab game. He'll throw a bullpen session today, with a probable appearance for Double-A Trenton on Wednesday.

Joe Girardi said he'll have an official announcement today. Trenton would be the logical place, as it opens the playoffs at home. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre opens its playoff series on the road.

Pettitte said there was a little soreness in his left groin, which had been the case after each preceding bullpen session in which he pushed off, and some shoulder soreness, the result of using some muscles he hasn't used in a while.

"I had a good work day yesterday," he said. "I hadn't been sore at all on the back of my shoulder; the back of my shoulder's sore today. It just means I was turning the intensity up, so it's perfect."

Mum's the word

Girardi didn't say whether he felt it necessary to talk with Javier Vazquez, who clearly was upset - and didn't hide it while talking with reporters - about being pulled Saturday after 42/3 innings with a 5-3 lead.

"That's stuff that we handle in the clubhouse," Girardi said. "Players are going to be upset with me from time to time because of things I do. That's my job. My job is to make decisions and to do what I think is best."

Extra bases

Derek Jeter was 0-for-4, extending his slide to 4-for-42. "We're getting there, we're getting there," he said. "You'd like for it to happen all in one day, but that's not always the case. Had some good swings and come back tomorrow." . . . Robinson Cano had a day off after starting 135 of the previous 136 games.
