BALTIMORE — Nothing to see here, folks.
At least not yet.
Giancarlo Stanton was out of the starting lineup for a second straight game Sunday.
"Just a little beat up overall, but I’m fine,” Stanton said Sunday morning, later adding that he would be available off the bench (he did not play). He expects to start Tuesday night at Citi Field in the first of two games against the Mets.
Stanton, who started only two of the five games after hitting a 457-foot two-run homer in the All-Star Game and being named the game's MVP, declined to specify his issue. “I’ve got a couple of things to figure out, but we’re fine,” he said. “Just making sure it doesn’t get there [to the point of a stint on the injured list].''
Since the All-Star break, Stanton has been out of the starting lineup three times — he pinch hit in two of those games — and started one game in leftfield and one game at DH.
“Nothing that I’m concerned about,” Aaron Boone said. “Biggest thing with me is, with the off day tomorrow, I just feel like it’s time that gives him a little bit of a reset that I think’s going to serve him really well and ultimately serve us really well. I don’t want to push through something right now [and cause something long-term].”
Boone later said: “I wouldn’t hesitate to use him today, I wouldn’t hesitate in the [right] situation if I had to put him in the outfield. So it’s more me just trying to take a long view of this and what’s going to give us the best version of G, and I think he’s really going to benefit from this.”
Latest on King
Michael King, who left Friday’s game with a right elbow fracture that ended his season, headed to New York on Saturday for further evaluation. A determination then will be made whether King, among MLB's best bullpen arms this season, will need surgery.
“We don’t know the extent of that yet,” Boone said of potential ligament damage to go along with the fracture.
If there is ligament damage, there’s a chance King will need Tommy John surgery.
“It’s probably a possibility,'' Boone said, "but we don’t know that yet.”
Setting up the Subway Series
Boone said Domingo German remains a possibility to start the second game of the Subway Series, which is Wednesday at Citi Field, but that isn’t yet official. Jordan Montgomery is slated to go in Tuesday’s series opener.
Extra bases
Aaron Hicks left the game in the ninth inning after an RBI single that made it 6-0. He said it was his left hamstring “cramping up” and that he expects to be ready to face the Mets on Tuesday . . ..Righty Ron Marinaccio, out since July 3 with right shoulder inflammation, was activated Sunday. Righthander Shane Greene, who allowed a two-run homer Saturday after being called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, was sent back to the minors.
