Yankees won’t switch series sites with Rays

BALTIMORE — Joe Girardi said the where of next week’s three-game road series against the Tampa Bay Rays still is very much up in the air because of Hurricane Irma.

Various options exist, including playing at a neutral site such as the Chicago White Sox’s Guaranteed Rate Field or delaying the start of the series at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg until Tuesday, perhaps playing one game then and a doubleheader Wednesday.

“I still think they’re waiting to follow the path [of the storm],” Girardi said.

But flipping series — playing next Monday through Wednesday at Yankee Stadium and playing the three games scheduled for Sept. 26-28 in St. Petersburg — is not an option.

“I think the trouble with that is people bought tickets for those games for us,” Girardi said. “I don’t think that’s fair to do to our fans. I don’t think that’s going to happen.”

The Yankees, who will open a three-game series against the Rangers Friday night in Texas, are slated to fly into Tampa on Sunday night but might fly there any time between Sunday and Tuesday morning, depending on Irma.

Sabathia to take his turn after getting injection

Though CC Sabathia received a lubrication injection in his right knee Wednesday and was to be evaluated by team physician Christopher Ahmad on Thursday in New York, he will join the club in Arlington, Texas, and take his next turn in the rotation, likely on Sunday.

“It’s fine,” Girardi said of the knee. “He’s talked about the maintenance program with it and staying ahead of it, so that’s what they’re trying to do.”

Warren a tough loss

Girardi said the loss of reliever Adam Warren, out for at least two weeks with lower back spasms, “definitely hurts” the bullpen.

“He was a multiple-inning guy, a bridge guy,” Girardi said. “Our bullpen struggled the last time he went out [June 16-July 3]. I think we’re a little bit better equipped now than we were then, but we’re going to miss him.”

Warren has a 2.40 ERA in 45 games.
