Hidalgo, Westbeld combine for 37 points, lead No. 19 Notre Dame women past Boston College 79-55
BOSTON — Hannah Hidalgo scored 19 points, Maddy Westbeld added 18 and No. 19 Notre Dame overcome a bad first quarter to roll past Boston College 79-55 on Sunday.
Notre Dame made only 4 of 18 shots in the first quarter and fell behind 21-11 heading to the second period. The tide turned in the second 10 minutes as Boston College made 1 of 13 shots and was outscored 18-4. Notre Dame led 29-25 at halftime and kept the momentum rolling into the second half, outscoring Boston College 42-19 in the middle two quarters.
Hidalgo had seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals for Notre Dame. Westbeld hit 7 of 9 shots and grabbed six rebounds. Sonia Citron scored 16 and Anna DeWolfe 11 for the Fighting Irish (21-6, 11-5 ACC). Notre Dame was far from perfect, making only 3 of 20 3-pointers with Hidalgo and Citron both going 0 for 6. Hidalgo had five of Notre Dame's 14 turnovers.
BC's Dontavia Waggoner scored nearly half of her team's points, finishing with 25 points on 9 of 17 shooting plus seven free throws. The senior also grabbed 15 rebounds in her final home game for the Eagles (11-18, 3-13). BC finished the game on a 1-for-11 shooting slump to finish at 30.8% overall.
Boston College threatened briefly in the fourth quarter when a layup by Waggoner made it 59-49 with 5 1/2 minutes remaining. That was the last made shot for the Eagles and Notre Dame scored the next 13 points to put the game away.
Notre Dame finishes the regular season with two home games — vs. No. 8 Virginia Tech on Thursday and vs. No. 20 Louisville on Sunday.
Boston College, which has lost 10 in a row, hosts North Carolina on Thursday and visits Pittsburgh on Sunday.
