Gonzaga takes over AP No. 1 spot for first time

The to-do list for the Gonzaga basketball team got shorter Monday: For the first time, the Zags were ranked No. 1 in The Associated Press poll.

The school received 51 first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel, 44 more than Indiana. Duke, winners over Miami after a loss to Virginia, remained third with five first-place votes.

Kansas and Georgetown both jumped two spots to fourth and fifth. The Hoyas received the other two first-place votes. Miami, Michigan, Louisville, Kansas State and Michigan State rounded out the top 10.

Kansas 79, Texas Tech 42: Jeff Withey scored 22 points and No. 4 Kansas (26-4, 14-3 Big 12) had a 19-2 run in the first half for a 45-20 lead, then opened the second half with a 16-3 run in Lawrence. Jordan Tolbert had 16 points for Texas Tech (10-18, 3-14).

Louisville 67, Cincinnati 51: Russ Smith scored 18 points and No. 8 Louisville gave Rick Pitino his 300th victory with the Cardinals. Louisville (25-5, 13-4 Big East) picked up its sixth straight win and drew within one-half game of first-place Georgetown.

WOMEN'S GAMES

Baylor 90, Kansas State 68: Brittney Griner scored a Big 12 single-game record 50 points in her final regular-season game at Baylor to lead the top-ranked Lady Bears. Baylor wrapped up its second consecutive undefeated conference title, becoming the first team to twice go through Big 12 play without a loss.

Notre Dame 96, UConn 87: Skylar Diggins scored 29 points and sparked a deciding run in the third overtime as host No. 2 Notre Dame beat third-ranked Connecticut to win the Big East regular-season title outright for the second straight year. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis led UConn with 26 points.

St. John's 67, DePaul 54: Amber Thompson had 20 points and 16 rebounds and Shenneika Smith 24 points for the host Red Storm (17-11, 11-5 Big East). Jasmine Penny scored 14 points to lead DePaul (20-10, 9-7).-- AP
