Missed FTs hurt Pride in loss to Oregon St.
Hofstra did almost everything needed to get a tough win on the road: A balanced scoring attack with four players reaching double figures, check; shooting 50 percent from three-point range, check. The Pride was efficient from the field, too, shooting 48 percent.
Unfortunately for the Pride, inside defense and free-throw shooting were two facets of the game visiting Hofstra couldn't master in an 82-72 loss to Oregon State in the TicketCity Legends Classic at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Ore., on Wednesday night.
Mike Moore had 16 points and David Imes added 15 points and seven rebounds for Hofstra (1-1). Shemiye McLendon and Nathaniel Lester, who was in foul trouble and played just 16 minutes, finished with 12 points each.
But offense wasn't the problem for the Pride. The Beavers had 48 points in the paint and scored 26 points off 15 Hofstra turnovers.
Oregon State (3-0), led by Jared Cunningham with 35 points and forward Devon Collier (25 points), shot 52 percent from the field. Cunningham (11-16) and Collier shot a combined 20 of 28 from the floor.
Hofstra's poor free-throw shooting also manifested itself at a critical juncture.
Trailing 62-60 with 7:11 left, Hofstra had a chance to tie the score, but Stevie Mejia missed the front end of a one-and-one. Oregon State answered with an 8-2 run for a 72-64 lead with 3:45 left.
Hofstra shot just 59 percent (19-32) from the line and missed eight of its 16 attempts in the second half.
Hofstra hosts St. Francis (N.Y.) on Saturday at 4 p.m.
