Stony Brook struggled from the field and on the glass in a 74-63 loss to Sacred Heart in men's basketball last night at the Pitt Center in Fairfield, Conn.

Stony Brook shot 42 percent from the field and just 29 percent (6-for-21) on three-pointers. Sacred Heart outrebounded the Seawolves 39-28, with 12 on the offensive end, leading to 14 second- chance points.

"We didn't play our best basketball tonight,'' coach Steve Pikiell said. "Give credit to Sacred Heart. They're a good team that hustled for every rebound tonight, and that gave them extra chances and made our defense work harder on every possession.''

Trailing 36-25 early in the second half, Stony Brook went on a 17-8 run to pull within 44-42 with 13:46 remaining. The spurt was punctuated by a pair of three-point plays. After Dave Coley hit a jumper from the left elbow and made the ensuing free throw, Marcus Rouse stole the ball from Evan Kelley and bounced a pass to Dallis Joyner, who was fouled on his dunk. He converted the three-point play to get Stony Brook within two.

Sacred Heart's Stan Dulaire answered the run with a dunk and Stony Brook turned the ball over on back-to-back possessions. Leonard Hayes got SBU within three at 48-45 on a three-pointer with 11:24 left, but the Pioneers (2-0) went on a 9-0 run that spanned six minutes as the Seawolves went 0-for-3 from the field and had three turnovers.

Dulaire's dunk with 2:47 left made it 64-52 and the Seawolves got no closer than eight points the rest of the way.

Joyner led the Seawolves with 11 points and Tommy Brenton added eight points, seven rebounds and three steals.
