Kieran McArdle's three goals and six assists lead St. John's past Holy Cross

Kieran McArdle had three goals and six assists to lift visiting St. John's to an 11-9 season-opening lacrosse win over Holy Cross Saturday in Worcester, Mass.

It was a career day for the Connetquot graduate, a junior attackman who posted a career high in assists and points (nine). McArdle became the second player since the program's reinstatement in 2005 to reach 100 career points, doing so in only 30 games. The junior has 52 goals, 56 assists and 108 points for his career.

Alex Lagodich scored two goals and Kevin Cernuto had a goal and two assists.

Marist 13, Stony Brook 9: Freshman Brody Eastwood and senior Jeff Tundo scored three goals each for visiting Stony Brook, which blew a four-goal lead in its season opener.

Freshman Matt Schultz added two goals and junior Cole Millican had a career-high three assists for the Seawolves. SBU built leads of 4-0 and 8-5 but managed only one goal in the second half. Schultz's goal cut Stony Brook's deficit to 10-9, but Marist answered with three straight to end the game.

Freshman Frank Lucatuorto was impressive in his collegiate debut, winning 15 of 24 draws and tallying eight ground balls.

Said coach Jim Nagle, "I thought our first quarter of play was really good; we were patient and shared the ball. We rushed some of our opportunities and didn't capitalize on others. We're a young team and we're going to get a lot better.''

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Stony Brook 20, Bucknell 5: Claire Petersen had four goals and six assists, tying her career high with 10 points for No. 18 Stony Brook in its season opener. Demmianne Cook scored seven goals and Amber Kupres had three as eight players scored for the visiting Seawolves. Frankie Caridi had seven saves and allowed only three goals.
