Carson Puriefoy III's floater in the lane with one second left sent Thursday night's game to overtime, but No. 17 Vanderbilt went on to defeat Stony Brook, 79-72, in Nashville, Tennessee.
The Seawolves (1-1) built a 10-point lead early in the second half, and Lucas Woodhouse's three-pointer put them ahead 62-56 with 4:11 to play.
Wade Baldwin IV's two free throws with 1:43 left gave Vanderbilt its first lead of the second half at 64-62, and the game went to OT tied at 66.
Jameel Warney had 22 points and 11 rebounds (his 41st career double-double and eighth in a row), Puriefoy added 16 points and Ahmad Walker had 13. Woodhouse added eight points, 11 rebounds and four assists.
Baldwin had 21 points for Vanderbilt (3-0), which features three 7-footers in 7-1 Luke Kornet and 7-footers Damian Jones (13 points) and Josh Henderson. Riley LaChance also had 13 points for the Commodores, who went 9-for-10 from the free-throw line in overtime.
"It was an honor to play here,'' Stony Brook coach Steve Pikiell said. "I admire everything Vanderbilt is about and appreciate coach [Kevin] Stallings for having us here. What a great game. We just came up a bit short. We showed a lot of great signs. We outrebounded them [43-34] and certainly Jameel came ready to play. Their size is a big factor and Baldwin came off the bench and had an outstanding game.''
Said Warney, "[Jones] is really good. I thought I played him to the best of my abilities. He definitely got some good looks, but I thought I got some good looks, too. In the end, I think it was a pretty even matchup.''
