49ers' prez: Despite 0-5 start, Singletary's job not on the line

In the wake of the 49ers' 0-5 start, team president Jed York said he would "absolutely" retain Mike Singletary for the remainder of the season. York made the comments in an interview with NBC Bay Area before last night's loss to the Eagles in San Francisco.

"His job is not on the line," York said when asked if Singletary needed to beat the Eagles, per the San Jose Mercury News via NBC. "When you're losing football games or when you're winning football games, it doesn't matter what happened before. It's what's coming up."

York said he remains hopeful, based in part on how one of the 49ers' Super Bowl championship teams fared one season.

York pointed to the 49ers' Super Bowl XXIII team. "We were 5-6 at one point and ended up being 10-6 and went on to win the Super Bowl," he said.

Actually, the 49ers were 6-5 in the 1988 seaon before going on to win the championship behind quarterback Joe Montana.

If the 49ers were to go 10-6 this season, they'd have to go 10-1 over their remaining 11 games.

Singletary has a 13-17 record since taking over as head coach midway through the 2008 season.
