Before the Revis deal went down, Rex blew a gasket
Rex Ryan is admittedly has a volatile personality, despite his outward appearance as the big jolly type. And his temper was in full form last night as negotiations took place between the Jets and the agents for Darrelle Revis.
At one point, Ryan was so infuriated by the pace of the talks - which were being conducted on a conference call - that he screamed at all the principals - including Jets officials, as well as agents Neil Schwartz and Jonathan Feinsod. And then he walked out of the conference room in which the talks were being held.
"I was just a little like, 'Come on,'" Ryan said today. "I wanted it to happen. [Public relations director] Bruce Speight had a great saying, 'It's kind of like a boyfriend-girlfriend thing, but the parents won't let you get together.' That was kind of how I felt. He wanted to play. I wanted him to play, but for some reason, it wasn't happening."
When asked if everyone heard his rant, Ryan said, "Oh, yeah. It was directed at everybody."
Ryan stormed out of the room, and the talks continued between the agents and Jets' officials, including general manager Mike Tannenbaum. Eventually, Tannenbaum called Ryan back into the room.
"Mike stayed the course and got the deal done and he came down and said, 'Rex, you can't leave. You can leave the meeting, but you can't leave the building.' That was how he put it. They did a great job. I can't tell you how impressive it was to watch real professionals work."
But Ryan has no desire to participate in more negotiations.
"This would be the last time I get involved ... ever," he said. "I think it would be the last time I was ever invited."
