If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball. And if you can play guard, Shawn Andrews said, you can play tackle.

At least Andrews is hoping it's that way. For the first time since signing with the Giants at the end of training camp, Andrews was working at left tackle in yesterday's practice. He'll work at right tackle Thursday. With Will Beatty sidelined with a broken foot - he'll have surgery Thursday - Andrews is the team's only legitimate backup.

"They sat me down, said 'Hey let's focus on tackle this week,' so that's what I'm doing," Andrews said. "It's a little bit easier than guard with the protections and running, so I think it'll be easy."

Andrews, a Pro Bowl guard for the Eagles, played tackle in college. "You have to be versatile," he said. "Wherever I'm called upon I'll help out any way that I possibly can."

So can any guard play tackle? "It depends on the person and what kind of athlete he is," Andrews said. "Against the quicker defensive ends on the edge you have to have some athleticism. I guess it's just per guard."

Osi, Nicks sit out

Osi Umenyiora's knee needed rest after what Tom Coughlin called "wear and tear" and WR Hakeem Nicks sat out with a sore ankle he said he rolled in the second quarter on Sunday. Both finished the game on Sunday and both are expected back at practice field Thursday.

Sorgi does what he can

Backup QB Jim Sorgi had shoulder surgery last week, but he's been helping prepare for the Colts, his previous team. He just doesn't know what good it will do.

"I helped put in a lot of the information that they use," he said. "But sometimes how much you know doesn't really matter. It's all about executing . . . I can give the defense here all the information that I can, but it's all, can we get to Peyton? Can we knock him down? Can we get to him before he gets the ball out?"
