Charlie Bullen was as a candidate for defensive coordinator vacancies, but the Giants will retain their outside linebackers coach, according to a league source.

Bullen will also add the title of run game coordinator. NFL Network reported that Bullen also received a contract extension entering his third season.

Both the Cardinals and Browns asked to interview Bullen over the past week for their defensive coordinator positions. Instead Bullen will stay on coach John Harbaugh’s staff after helping linebacker Brian Burns become a second-team All-Pro last season after a career-high 16 1/2 sacks.

Fellow linebacker Abdul Carter was fifth in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting after recording four sacks among his seven tackles for loss.

Bullen was one of two assistants retained by Harbaugh from the previous staff along with tight ends coach Tim Kelly.
