Practice Report: JPP gets mad, NASCAR makes its debut, Hosley gets cut

While we wait for the MRI results on Terrell Thomas, here is today’s practice report.

First, some good injury news. Da’Rel Scott became the first Giants player this season to return from an injury. He had missed two practices with an ankle injury but today he was dressed in helmet and shoulder pads like the rest of the team and participating fully.

Obviously the four guys on PUP did not practice. Neither did Keith Rivers (hamstring). Michael Boley was with Thomas in New York for an MRI on his hamstring, but Tom Coughlin made it sound like that was mostly precautionary. And Justin Trattou’s MRI came back clean so he could be back soon.

During individual drills today, it was Mathias Kiwanuka’s day to be a defensive end and yes, the Giants showed some of that NASCAR look. That left Spencer Paysinger and Jacquian Williams playing outside linebackers with Chase Blackburn in the middle with the first unit.

The practice got going with one-on-one drills. While I would have liked to see the offensive and defensive linemen work on their pass rushing and pass protection, we were stationed closer to the receivers and cornerbacks, so those are the details you’ll get here. A few highlights: Jerrel Jernigan nearly made a nice catch on a deep ball from Manning that was a bit underthrown, coming back against the coverage of Prince Amukamara but unable to hold on … Both Brandon Collins and Bruce Johnson slipped on a route … Jayron Hosley had to be carted off after he fell while covering Isaiah Stanback on the sideline. Turned out Hosley lacerated his knee and required stitches … David Douglas beat Antwaun Molden deep and made a nice catch … Amukamara came up with a nice diving pass deflection while covering Victor Cruz … Jernigan caught a nice slant pass against Bruce Johnson … Antrel Rolle was covering Ramses Barden and it looked like Barden had a step on Rolle. But then Barden didn’t continue the route. That left Perrilloux holding the ball. Barden yelled something like “I didn’t think I’d beat him” as an explanation of why he did not continue his route after gaining the step.

Here are some highlights from the first series of 11-on-11 snaps, which featured Michael Coe as the starting cornerback in place of Thomas: Domenik Hixon caught a deep in against Coe but Antrel Rolle was in position and would have put a good hit on Hixon … Ahmad Bradshaw took a tumble and slipped going through the line on a run up the middle … Manning threw a high pass for Hixon while rolling right that was incomplete … Martellus Bennett made a nice catch that was nearly batted away by Stevie Brown … Christian Hopkins dove but couldn’t come up with a pass from Carr. Mark Herzlich was covering him … Andre Brown ran up the middle and Kiwanuka gave him a good thump … Carr wanted to hit Rueben Randle deep down the left sideline but he was covered well by Brandon Bing so Carr had no place to throw it … Bear Pascoe was wide open on a pass from Perrilloux … Jacquain Williams gave a good pop to rookie David Wilson on a run up the middle … Jake Muasau almost made a full tackle on Wilson, wrapping him and spinning him, after he caught a pass from Perrilloux … Mitch Petrus, you was pulled yesterday, was back at left guard with the second unit today … Also, one other thing I noticed was that the guys seemed intent on giving David Wilson a good hit whenever they had the chance. Welcome to the NFL.

The Giants then worked on kickoff coverage with Jernigan and Collins working as returners. Then Tynes kicked five field goals, all of them good (a PAT and then from 29, 32, 32 and 37 yards). None were caught by Carmen Pizzano. He’s proving to be a one-hit wonder.

In seven-on-sevens: Bear Pascoe made a diving catch … Cruz caught a pass running from the slot with Barden and Jernigan as the outside receivers. He was covered by Rolle … Jernigan caught a pass in traffic over the middle … Randle was wide open for a pass where the defense broke down … Jacquian Williams hit Dan DePalma with a clothesline across the chin after he caught a pass … Julian Talley dropped a pass from Perrilloux, Adrien Robinson made a nice catch but Muasau was behind him and poked the ball away to cause a fumble … DePalma had a catch over the middle.

Here are some highlights from the second series of 11-on-11 snaps: The first two plays told a story unto themselves. On the first snap D.J. Ware ran and Williams was there to make the tackle, but on the edge Bear Pascoe managed to get the best of Jason Pierre0Paul and JPP wound up on his backside. JPP did not seem very happy with that, and on the next snap he bulled through a double-team by Will Beatty and Martellus Bennett and batted down a pass by Eli Manning. JPP was a man on a mission on that play after being knocked down the play before … The Giants later lined up in their NASCAR look with Kiwi and Osi outside, Tuck and JPP in the middle … Manning tried to hit Hixon on a deep pass down the left sideline, but because of the pressure from that defensive line he couldn’t get the ball there. Prince Amukamara was in position to make the interception on the underthrown ball, but Hixon turned into a defensive back – an illegal defensive back -- and pulled Amukamara down from behind by the shoulders. Corey Webster came running over to taunt Hixon about the clear penalty and safeties coach Dave Merritt threw his hat to simulate a penalty flag … Collins dropped a pass from Carr along the sideline and got a tap on the helmet from Carr as he went back through the offensive huddle … Andre Brown took a counter toss to the left and Marvin Austin did a nice job reading it and having the speed to ride Brown out of bounds … Adrien Robinson had a pass go just off his hands … DePalma made another nice catch on a ball thrown behind him with Bruce Johnson in coverage.

Here are some highlights from the third series of 11-on-11 snaps: Bradshaw dropped a pass from Manning, but Kiwanuka was there to wrap up Bradshaw on the short play even if he did catch it … Manning had to throw away a screen to Ware when the defensive line came through the offensive line … Dante Hughes came down with an interception on a pass from Manning to Cruz. Perry Fewell was so excited about it he ran with Hughes all the way to the far end zone, escorting him about 70 yards on the touchdown return … Matt Brouha made a nice stop on a run by Brown … Collins had some missteps early but made a nice catch on a high pass from Carr … Scott took a toos out on the right side and Blackburn was there … Brown dropped a pass from Carr … Perrilloux’s play-action pass for Talley was incomplete and just over the leaping hands of Jacquain Williams … For the first time this camp the last play of a practice was not a handoff to Joe Martinek. Perhaps the Giants thought they were becoming too predictable. This time it was an incomplete pass from Perrilloux to Stanback. Martinek, however, was the tailback on the play.
