Sorgi likely out all week, will just have to await Giants' decision

Jim Sorgi said he wanted to be back on the field by Monday. That’s not happening. Now he’s hoping he’s still on the roster come next Monday.

The backup quarterback who has a torn anterior capsule in his throwing shoulder said he has seen very little improvement in the two weeks since suffereing the injury against the Jets in the preseason opener. Last week he admitted to being worried about not having shown the Giants, a team he signed with during the offseason after six years with the Colts, enough for them to stick with him as the backup to Eli Manning. In the last two years the Giants have kept just two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster and Rhett Bomar has been the backup to Manning the last two weeks (even starting and playing the whole game against the Steelers).

“There hasn’t been much talk about it,” Sorgi said of conversations with the team about how his injury status will affect his roster security. “I don’t know if their patience is wearing thin. I’m sure it is. Just a numbers game, it’s getting to be that point. It’s a tough position for me to be in, it’s a tough position for them to be in.”

"We’re going to go by whatever the medical circumstance is," Tom Coughlin said on Sunday. "Of course, the closer we get we’re going to have to make some calls, but let’s get some response this week from a medical standpoint."

That response appears to be silence as far as Sorgi getting back on the field. Sorgi said he is still unable to raise his right arm over his head and noted that if the injury lingers for another few weeks he might need surgery to repair it. His original timeframe for a return was 2-3 weeks and today is two weeks to the day.

The Giants’ roster must be trimmed to 53 names by Saturday. Sorgi was looking forward to competing with Bomar this week in practice and likely splitting time with him against the Patriots on Thursday night in a final duel. Now it looks like he’ll be sidelined for all of that and have to just sit by and rehab and think about his tenuous future with the Giants.

“I don’t want to speculate on how long it’s going to be,” Sorgi said. “I’m trying to take it one day at a time. I’m happy the team has been this patient with me. Hopefully they can be a little more patient and wait until I get better.”
