Next Super Bowl to ... Oakland?

A few minutes after NFL owners voted to award the 2014 Super Bowl to the New York/New Jersey contingent, we caught up with Raiders chief executive officer Amy Trask to get her reaction. In the process, she dropped a nugget that the Raiders plan to pursue a future Super Bowl as part of the team's bid to construct a new stadium.

"I voted for Oakland as a write-in candidate," Trask said with a wink after being asked her reaction to the New York/New Jersey win. And then she detailed the merits of a future Super Bowl in Oakland.

"I think Oakland would absolutely be a terrific site for a future Super Bowl and we're working closely with the city and the county and all sorts of exciting ideas with a new Bay Area stadium," she said. 

Trask said the Raiders hope to build a new stadium at the site of their current stadium, which is considered one of the poorest facilities in the league. "We like the site of our existing stadium. It's very centrally located in the Bay Area as a whole. It's on a freeway, and there are two public transport options that drop off right at the stadium. Where other stadiums are trying to figure out how to bring public transportation to their site, the Oakland site has BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit), Amtrak, and the Altamont Commuter Express." 

It's uncertain when the Raiders would be in position to bid for a future Super Bowl. But it could be a major enticement for the construction of a new stadium if the Raiders were able to build momentum to bring a Super Bowl to Oakland.

Then again, they might have competition in the Bay Area; the 49ers are actively pursuing construction of a new stadium in Santa Clara.
