Power Rankings: Stillers, Bears, Texans rise; Vikings, Cowboys fall
Two weeks in, and it's already chaos in the NFL.
Surprises at the top: the Texans, Stillers and Bears, all of whom are off to 2-0 starts. Want more? How about the Bucs, Dolphins and Chiefs at 2-0?
Shockers on the downside? Try Dallas and Minnesota, who are now a combined 0-4.
About the only sure things: The Saints are still rolling after their Super Bowl win, and the Bills are still awful.
Here's a closer look:
(Ranking, team, record, last week's ranking)
1. Saints (2-0) (1): Saints get by 49ers with last-second field goal on the road. Not an easy task for defending champs, especially against a defense smarting from opening-day thumping. The win doesn't come without a price; Reggie Bush suffers fractured fibula.
2. Packers (2-0) (3): Pack still worried about Ryan Grant’s season-ending injury, but not against Bills. Green Bay pounds Buffalo at home.
3. Texans (2-0) (5): After opening day upset of Indy at home, Texans stage a furious comeback in Washington to beat the Redskins in OT.
4. Steelers (2-0) (14): Shocking. Absolutely, positively shocking. Down to the fourth quarterback on the roster, and the Steelers beat the Titans on the road to go 2-0.
5. Colts (1-1) (8): The Manning Bowl turned out to be a dud, as Peyton’s Colts waxed Eli’s Giants 38-14. Big shocker was Indy’s use of the ground game to soften up Giants’ D.
6. Dolphins (2-0) (18): Miami one of the early surprise teams; Week 1 win over Buffalo was expected, but not Week 2 road win over Minny. Terrific defensive effort.
7. Bears (2-0) (21): It’s one thing to beat the Lions at home, but quite another to beat the Cowboys on the road. Nicely done.
8. Ravens (1-1) (2): After a bruising one-point win over the Jets in the Monday night opener, Ravens follow it up with a mistake-prone loss to division rival Cincy. Joe Flacco with four picks.
9. Jets (1-1) (10): Jets rally from loss to Ravens with superb second-half effort against Patriots, as Mark Sanchez puts together the best game of his young career. Too bad Braylon Edwards spoiled it all with his DWI arrest in the wee hours Tuesday morning.
10. Patriots (1-1) (4): Sure looked promising for the Pats in the first half, especially after that Brady-to-Moss TD over Revis. It all fell apart in the second half, as the Jets outscored New England 18-0.
11. Bengals (1-1) (12): Nice bounce-back from Week 1 pummeling in New England, as Cincy hangs on against Ravens with a ball-hawking defense leading the way.
12. Chiefs (2-0) (15): Another of the early surprise teams, KC follows up on Week 1 shocker over the Chargers by edging the woeful Browns on the road.
13. Titans (1-1) (7): It’s only Week 2, and already Vince Young has his first benching of the season. After Week 1 laugher over Raiders, it’s back to earth after home loss to Steelers.
14. Giants (1-1) (9): Shades of 2009: Giants’ defense goes belly-up against Colts in embarrassing Sunday night loss.
15. Chargers (1-1) (16): Chargers take out frustrations from opening-day loss to Chiefs by smacking around Jaguars at home, 38-13.
16. Redskins (1-1) (17): A lot of soul searching in D.C., as the Redskins let Matt Schaub hang a 400-yard passing day on them and lose in OT. Redskins outscored 20-7 in second half.
17. Eagles (1-1) (20): Michael Vick wins his first start since the 2006 season, as the Iggles topple the Lions. But it’s back to the bench for Vick as Kevin Kolb is set to return from a concussion.
18. Falcons (1-1) (19): Falcons shake off Week 1 loss to Stillers and return home to pound the woeful Cardinals.
19. Broncos (1-1) (25): After shaky Week 1 effort in Jacksonville, Broncos rout the Seahawks at home.
20. Vikings (0-2) (6): Time to panic? Sure looks that way. Brett Favre is off to a brutal start, and so are the Vikings.
21. Cowboys (0-2) (11): How much longer before Jerry Jones gives Wade Phillips a vote of confidence?
22. Seahawks (1-1) (13): Pete Carroll had it all going in the opener against the 49ers. And then he didn’t. Seahawks get thumped at Mile High.
23. Buccaneers (2-0) (28): Bucs didn’t get their second win last year until Dec. 20. They follow up Week 1 win at home with nice road win in Carolina. Only word of caution here: quality of first two opponents weak. But the Bucs aren't quibbling.
24. Jaguars (1-1) (22): David Garrard takes a seat on the bench for a while in San Diego. Far cry from impressive Week 1 win at home against Denver.
25. 49ers (0-2) (27): Niners put up a good fight at home against Super Bowl champion Saints, but lose it on field goal with no time remaining. At least it was a better effort than Week 1 humiliation in Seattle.
26. Raiders (1-1) (31): So much for the Jason Campbell-as-Jim Plunkett comparisons. Campbell benched against Rams, as Bruce Gradkowski engineers the win.
27. Cardinals (1-1) (23): Without Kurt Warner, the Cardinals’ offense has fallen off a cliff.
28. Lions (0-2) (24): Lions lose another heartbreaker, this one at home to the Iggles. Not a fun way to follow up that loss to Chicago on disputed Calvin Johnson play at the end.
29. Rams (0-2) (29): Well, at least the Rams are making it close. After losing nail-biter to Cardinals in Week 1, they succumb to the Raiders, 16-14.
30. Panthers (0-2) (26): The Jimmy Clausen era begins just three weeks into his rookie season.
31. Browns (0-2) (32): Browns inaugurate Ring of Honor at halftime to pay tribute to franchise’s all-time greats. Too bad that was the highlight of the afternoon, as the Browns lose to the Chiefs.
32. Bills (0-2): (30) Two weeks into Chan Gailey’s run, and already there’s a quarterback change. Take a seat, Trent Edwards. Time for Ryan Fitzpatrick.
