Jets fans will be waking up to the news they've been wanting to hear all along in this, the summer of the Darrelle Revis holdout: The All Pro cornerback is back.

Revis himself announced it on his Twitter account, and even followed up with an apology over how difficult things turned out to be. "It has not only been hard on u guys, but it has for me too. I just want to tell yall that I'm sorry for this process and I can't wait to get back on the field."

The deal is reported to be worth $46 million, with $32 million in guarantees, according to ESPN and the Daily News. In an early-morning conference call with reporters, general manager Mike Tannenbaum said the deal was "an intermediate step to what we hope will be an entire career of Darrelle as a Jet, for him to retire as a Jet, and for him to hopefully go to the Hall of Fame as a Jet."

Under his old contract, Revis was set to make $21 million over the next three years, all of which was guaranteed until his holdout voided the guarantees. He accrued nearly $600,000 in fines, although Tannenbaum said it was now an internal decision as to what would happen to the fines.

Head coach Rex Ryan and team owner Woody Johnson took a trip to South Florida on Saturday afternoon to meet with Revis, his mother and his uncle, former NFL defensive lineman Sean Gilbert. The meeting was first reported by the Daily News. Gilbert once sat out an entire season in a contract dispute with the Redskins, and was then traded.

Ryan met with Gilbert and Revis for most of the day on Sunday, and Tannenbaum said that enough progress had been made to commence negotiations.

"Those guys going down there was a huge step," Tannenbaum said. "I really wasn't optimistic, I really wasn't. It was a hard set of dynamics. I'm optimistic by nature, but gosh, this was really hard. There was a lot of heavy lifting. This honestly and truly was really, really hard."

Tannenbaum said it wasn't until around 11 p.m. last night that the two sides achieved what the general manager called "a breakthrough."

Revis is expected to fly to the Jets' training complex in New Jersey later this morning, where he will sign his deal. It is anticipated that he will hold a news conference with reporters.

When asked to describe Ryan's reaction when he was told the news that the deal was finalized, Tannebaum said, "I think I had to medicate the head coach."

There may be a similar reaction among Jets fans after they hear the news.

Go ahead and pinch yourselves. It's really over.
