Sometimes, higher numbers are better in golf. In this case, it is 400: the volunteers being sought for the U.S. Women's Amateur at Nassau Country Club in Glen Cove on Aug. 4-10. Roles include clubhouse hospitality, scoring and just helping out here and there.
Registration is open at 2014womensam.com. Peter Quick, tournament co-chairman and president of the club, said that whoever signs up earliest will have a better choice of jobs. Quick affirmed during media day Monday that Nassau is proud to be the first club to host two national championships exactly 100 years apart. He also cited another big number, saying the event will pump $3 million into the local economy.
"The [2013] U.S. Women's Open was crazy enough, having all my friends and family come out and support me. The U.S. Women's Am is literally less than 30 minutes from my house,'' said Annie Park of Levittown, who has a guaranteed spot in the 156-player field because she reached the quarterfinals in Charleston, South Carolina, last year. The defending NCAA women's champion for USC, Park will have to miss the U.S. Women's Open in Pinehurst, North Carolina, next month because she will be representing the United States at the World University Championships in Crans-Montana, Switzerland.
LIer Shon turns pro
Kelly Shon of Port Washington has finished her college career at Princeton and will graduate June 1. She already is on to her next career, having turned pro and joined the Symetra Tour, looking to earn her way onto the LPGA Tour.
Fallon tees it up out East
You never know who you might see at a local public nine-hole course. "Tonight Show" host Jimmy Fallon says in the current issue of Golf Digest that he and Justin Timberlake were watching golf at his house in the Hamptons when they both said they would rather play than watch. So they showed up unannounced at the par-30 Poxabogue Golf Center in Bridgehampton.
"We played nine holes in about 35 minutes,'' Fallon told the magazine. "By the time we were done, there was kind of a crowd waiting for us.''
Steven Lee, Poxabogue's director of golf, said that Fallon often comes to the course and driving range with his family. "He's a super nice guy,'' Lee said. "One day, he walked into the pro shop and said, 'Hi, I'm Jimmy Fallon.' I said, 'I know who you are.' ''
