BIG 10: Blizzard can't stop Friars girls

1. ST. ANTHONY' S GIRLS BASKETBALL The Friars were unable to get a flight out to the Braggin' Rights Classic in Cincinnati due to the weather. They went to New Jersey instead and won the Prime Time/ESCIT Flight A crown by beating Penn Charter in the finals, 54-50. The Friars beat Nottingham in the first round, 73-38. That moves them into the top spot.
2. ST. MARY'S BOYS BASKETBALL Chavaughn Lewis scored 34 points with five rebounds and five assists and was named MVP of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament in Elmira, N.Y., as the Gaels defeated South Shore, 82-63, to win the title. The Gaels are 9-0.
3. LONGWOOD WRESTLING The Lions were idle last week because the Lions could not travel to the Long Mountain Duals in Dolgeville , N.Y. (near Syracuse) because of the massive snow storm.
4. EAST ISLIP GIRLS BOWLING It's same ol' for East Islip as the Redmen improved to 8-0 with a dominating win over West Islip last Thursday. Last week's performance upped the team's average to a county-best 1,001. Tara Ernst (206.7), Lena Sorrentino (204.6), Nancy Baione (198) and Kelsey Fryer (193.2) are now all in the top 10 among girls.
5. GLENN WRESTLING Won the Raider Invitational at Patchogue-Medford by 12 points over Wantagh, 362-350. The Knights crowned four champions in Vin Punzone (119), James Dekrone (130), Kevin Massa (171), and Mike Pinto (285).
6. LONG ISLAND LUTHERAN BOYS BASKETBALL L.I. Lutheran (8-1) is playing the Island's best schedule, the independent Crusaders lost their first game of the season to Plymouth-Whitemarsh of suburban Philadelphia, 62-54.
7. ST. ANTHONY'S BOYS ICE HOCKEY The reigning CHSHL champs have been dormant throughout the Christmas season after suffering its first loss of the season to St. Joseph by the Sea on Dec. 18. The Friars have outscored their opponents 24-11 so far this year and look to get back on the winning track with two games this week against Iona Prep and Holy Cross.
8. WARD MELVILLE GIRLS FENCING The Patriots have won nine straight Long Island championships. Another one is in order in 2011! They have 128 consecutive dual meet wins.
9. WARD MELVILLE BOYS FENCING The Patriots have won four straight Long Island crowns and try to keep pace with the girls in their own district.
10. ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST GIRLS BASKETBALL The Cougars were scheduled to play in the Disney Tournament and tried to get an early flight to beat the storm, but it was cancelled. They tried the next few days but were unable to get a flight and played no games.

Matt Hecker, Sachem East, boys bowling: The junior bowled a 300 in game one of a 3-0 win over Connetquot.
Barbara Sullivan, Garden City, girls basketball: The senior reached 1,000 career points in a 61-58 double overtime loss to Freeport by scoring 29 points.
Amber Davis, Center Moriches, girls basketball: She had 24 of her 31 points in the second half to lead Center Moriches in a 55-47 win over Deer Park in the Suffolk Shootout.
Alison Ricchiuti, Herricks, girls basketball: The sophomore scored 26 of her career-high 30 points in a 10-minute span between the second and third quarters to lead Herricks to a 51-43 win over New Hyde Park in the finals of the New Hyde Park Tournament. Ricchiuti was also named Tournament MVP.
Chavaughn Lewis, St. Mary's, boys basketball: In leading the unbeaten Gaels to a pair of victories and the championship of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament in Elmira, N.Y., last week, Lewis scored 34 points in the final and 17 in the semifinals.
Melissa Sherwin, Middle Country, girls bowling: The sophomore continues to flirt with perfection, rolling games of 249, 268 and 269.
Victoria Bontempo, Smithtown, girls bowling: Victoria Bontempo bowled a 268 in the third game of Smithtown's win over North Babylon.
