Davis scores 42 to lead SWR boys in 3 OTs
Senior guard Kevin Davis had seven of his career-high 42 points in the third overtime as Shoreham-Wading River topped Hampton Bays, 82-78, in its boys basketball non-league opener Tuesday.
Trailing 40-28 with 2:30 left in regulation, Brandon Warner (six points) and Davis totaled 10 points during a 14-2 run that gave SWR a 42-40 lead with 10 seconds left. Luke Mercurio (20 points) scored a two-pointer to force the first overtime for Hampton Bays.
Justin Carbone scored seven of his 14 points in the second and third overtimes for Hampton Bays, and Cameron Booth led the Baymen with 24 points. Warner finished with 12 points and Ryan McAlary had seven points and four assists in the win.
Sayville 54, Northport 50: James Rupp scored 23 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter and overtime, and Vinny Sakk had eight points and 13 rebounds for Sayville in non-league.
Huntington 61, Commack 57: John Patron scored 20 of his 34 points in a 38-27 second half to lead Huntington in non-league. P.J. White scored 10 of his 12 points in a 26-point fourth quarter.
Mercy 58, Bridgehampton 51: Justin Vasquez scored 20 points, Danny Hartmann had 11 points and nine rebounds and Joe Crosser 18 points to lead Mercy, which overcame a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter.
Hewlett 55, Valley Stream North 46: Avery Feldman scored 15 points, Josh Rivlin added 12 points and six rebounds and Jake Siegel had five points and seven rebounds to lead Hewlett in non-conference. Harrison Brenner also contributed six points and three steals for Hewlett in the win.
Plainview JFK 40, West Hempstead 35: Greg Rankel had 18 points and eight rebounds to lead Plainview JFK in non-league. Rankel hit a layup with 2:45 left in the fourth to give Plainview a 36-32 lead. Robbie Rothman and Ben Strack each had seven points in the win.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Lawrence Woodmere Academy 36, Solomon Schechter 34: Brittany Edwards hit a jumper from the right elbow with 32 seconds left in overtime to give LWA a 35-34 lead in IPPSAL. Gabby Cayne had 14 points and seven rebounds and Nadia Williams 13 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
New Hyde Park 49, Hempstead 26: Ciara McCullagh had 20 points and 10 rebounds and Maria Katsoulis 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists for New Hyde Park in the South Side Tournament consolation game. Donasia Scott led Hempstead with 11 points.
Our Lady of Mercy 48, Huntington 38: Olivia Walsh scored 17 points and freshman Marilyn Lehmuller had six points, 10 rebounds and five steals to lead Our Lady of Mercy (4-1) in non-league play. Jackie Waldron had 13 points and eighth-grader Heather Foerster added 11 points for Huntington (0-1) in the loss.boys Bowling
Sachem North 3, Middle Country 0: Junior Evan Kantor bowled the first 300 game of his varsity career as Sachem North topped Middle Country in a Suffolk League II match. Kantor's perfect moment came in Game 2 of a 705 series for Sachem North, which prevailed 877-1,012, 1,089-1,063, 1,073-1,011.
Islip 2, Comsewogue 1: Michael Kovarick rolled a 279 in Game 3 of a 753 series to lead Islip in a 1,050-961, 1,093-867 and 942-962 win in League IV. Matt Busch rolled a 235 in Game 2 for a 653 series in the win.girls Bowling
East Meadow 3, Westbury 0: Senior Erica Tuthill bowled a 254, 244 and 225 for a 723 series, the highest in at least 10 years for East Meadow, Jets coach Vinny Mascia told Newsday.
