Clarke beats East Rock, 27-21, in overtime
Mike Martiello scored on a 1-yard run in overtime to give Clarke a 27-21 win over East Rockaway Saturday in Nassau IV football. Clarke (4-3) got the ball when James Morace recovered a fumble on the first play of overtime. The winning score was set up by an 18-yard pass from Martiello to Anthony Gomes that put Clarke on the 2-yard line. Martiello had 25 carries for 184 yards and three TDs. Kyle Wenzel had nine tackles and Andrew Eannucci had 10 tackles. East Rockaway is 3-4.
West Hempstead 41, Mineola 36: Justin Boatwright rushed for a 2-yard touchdown with 58 seconds left to win it for West Hempstead (6-1). Danny Sheeler had an interception at the West Hempstead 25-yard line with 40 seconds left to seal it. Brian Gaffney scored his third TD on an 11-yard run and Steve Napolitano connected with Tom Breslin for the two-point conversion to give Mineola a 36-35 lead with just over two minutes remaining. Boatwright ran 19 times for 152 yards and three touchdowns. Petrizzo ran for a 34-yard TD run to give West Hempstead a 35-21 lead in the third quarter and finished with 92 yards on 12 carries. Mineola is 3-4.
Malverne 35, Oyster Bay 0: Malique Merchant had 13 carries for 90 yards and three TDs to lead Malverne (3-4). Jose Rodriguez set up Malverne's fourth touchdown with a 29-yard interception return, as the defense forced three turnovers. Najee Lee and Jordan Richard each had eight tackles and one sack. Oyster Bay is 2-5.
Valley Stream North 56, North Shore 28: Evan Henry rushed for a career-high 282 yards on 18 carries and scored five touchdowns for Valley Stream North (5-2). VSN trailed 14-0 before scoring five straight TDs, including three by Henry to take a 35-14 lead early in the third quarter. Anthony Martelli scored on runs of 7- and 3 yards on the first quarter to tie the score at 14 for VSN. Billy Patsos had 92 yards on eight carries with a TD and seven tackles. North Shore is 1-6.
Locust Valley 21, Cold Spring Harbor 6: Chris Appell had 17 carries for 81 yards, two touchdowns and an interception to lead Locust Valley (7-0). Joe Jacobi was 6-for-9 passing for 78 yards and a TD and Alex Rawa had five receptions for 74 yards and a TD. Cold Spring Harbor is 4-3.
