Glenn's Hamilton saves the day
Gary Hamilton, a reserve subbed into a different weight class, clinched the deciding bout for Glenn in its 36-28 win over MacArthur Saturday in a quarterfinal of the Union-Endicott wrestling duals in Binghamton.
The Knights, who won the tournament last season, fell behind MacArthur after losing four straight matches. After his team dropped the 160-pound bout, coach T.J. Brocking began to worry a little.
"I knew [MacArthur] was really good," Brocking said, "so I was hoping to win two of those four. Then to lose all four, I was surprised and disappointed."
Kevin Massa got them back into it by securing a 9-3 decision in the 171-pound match and then the Knights "rolled the dice," Brocking said.
Hamilton, who usually competes in the 160-pound bracket, was inserted into the 189-pound match. He weighed in at 171 pounds and Brocking let him have at it in a higher weight class.
Hamilton delivered, earning the victory with a 40-second pin of Tyler Haug with a reverse headlock.
"That was big," Brocking said. "We needed that and he really came through for us."
Glenn will face St. Anthony's in a semifinal at 9 a.m. .
