Long Island wrestling top 10

Glenn remains the top team in our Big 10 (ahead of the Half Hollow Hills boys basketball team for the third straight week) after it won seven matches last week, including five at the ABC Duals at East Islip. Hauppauge remained at No. 6 for the second straight week.

Onto this week's top 10...

1. Glenn (16-0, 6-0 League VI) — The Knights' winning streak is at 54 after they clinched at least a share of the League VI title with a 61-12 win at Amityville on Wednesday followed by a 55-12 victory over Mt. Sinai on Friday. On Saturday, Glenn won five matches at the ABC Duals at East Islip, against Massapequa, Ward Melville, Copiague, Grand Street Campus and the host Redmen, to take the title. Senior Matt Gannon was named Most Outstanding Wrestler, as he earned his 100th career win. Eight Knights — Vinny Punzone (112), Sam Rachman (119), Kenny (130) and Nick Meinsen (140), Matt Fusaro (145), Nick Terdick (152), Joe Giaramita (189) and Joe Kohout (215) — all earned first-period pins in the East Islip match. Mike Bosco, this week's athlete of the week, earned a 4-3 decision over Mt. Sinai at 160 pounds.

Next up for the Knights: They'll close the dual-meet season with a 6 p.m. trip to Miller Place on Thursday, and then host their own tournament on Saturday.

2. Hauppauge (17-0, 5-0 League V) — The Eagles got a scare from Huntington on Friday, but kept their unblemished record in tact with a 37-24 win. Chanse Menendez bumped up a weight class, and his 7-2 win at 189 pounds over Duncan Murchison clinched the match for Hauppauge. Ken Collado (pictured) pinned Kevin Mendez in 2:45 at 119. On Wednesday, they won 49-23 at Comsewogue behind back-to-back technical falls from Anthony Piscitello (140 pounds) and Jesse Marro (145).

Next up for the Eagles: They'll look to seal up the League V title with a pair of 6:30 p.m. home matches, Wednesday against Sayville and Friday against Kings Park.

3. Longwood (23-0, 5-0 League I) — The Lions took down Patchogue-Medford 51-9 on Wednesday and Floyd 62-9 on Friday to seal up at least a share of the League I title. On Saturday, Longwood won four matches at the Whitman Duals, defeating Bellport (75-3), Bellmore JFK (62-6), Smithtown East (54-9) and St. Anthony's (48-20). Against the Friars, Malik Rasheed beat All State wrestler Jimmy Morris, 6-1, at 112 pounds.

Next up for the Lions: The League I finale at home against Commack at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.

4. Rocky Point (17-2, 5-1 League VI) — After winning a pair of League VI matches, 34-26 against Westhampton on Wednesday and 71-3 over Amityville on Friday, the Eagles won the North Fork Invitational at Southold behind Champion of Champions Thomas Dutton (103 pounds), who pinned Sayville's Nick Pesko in the first period, and his brother, Stephen, who took the 140-pound class by pinning Nick Castellanos of Connetquot in 5:45.

Next up for the Eagles: They'll wrap up the League VI slate with a 4:30 p.m. match on Friday at Mt. Sinai.

5. Connetquot (11-0, 5-0 League II) — The Thunderbirds locked up at least a share of the League II crown with a 55-15 win at Northport on Wednesday and a 51-12 victory over visiting Lindenhurst on Friday. They placed second to Rocky Point at the North Fork Invitational behind champions Sean (112 pounds) and James McCabe (119), Stephen Drew (130) and Shaun Gillen (152). James McCabe pinned Rocky Point's Dkqwan Johnson in 2:59 in the final to earn Most Outstanding Wrestler honors.

Next up for the Thunderbirds: The League II finale at Sachem North at 6:15 p.m. on friday.

6. Wantagh (20-5, 5-0 Conference 3A) — The Warriors sealed up the Conference 2A title with a 55-18 win at Bethpage on Wednesday. Matt Kaufman earned an 8-4 win over Daniel Chillianis at 145 pounds. On Friday, Wantagh defeated Monsignor Farrell, 40-26, behind Paul Friscia's second-period pin at 140.

Next up for the Warriors: They'll be the top seed in the Class B Nassau Duals on Saturday. They take on Mineola in the first round at 9 a.m. at Clarke.

7. St. Anthony's (20-5, 3-0 CHSAA) — The Friars earned a 34-27 win over CHSAA rival Chaminade on Wednesday, as Aaron Spector reversed Matt Sagan to his back in the third period to earn an 8-6 win at 140 pounds. They went 3-1 at Saturday's Wantagh Duals, beating Freeport (66-9), Patchogue-Medford (32-27) and Whtman (64-6) before losing to Longwood, 48-20. The one bright spot against the Lions was Chris Brienza's 8-5 victory over defending state runner-up Corey Rasheed at 103 pounds.

Next up for the Friars: They'll play host to Huntington at 5 p.m. on Wednesday before traveling to West Babylon for a 10 a.m. match on Saturday.

8. Sachem East (26-3, 5-1 League I) — The Flaming Arrows wrapped up their League I schedule with a 41-24 victory over visiting Floyd on Wednesday and a 31-21 win at Commack on Friday night. Mark Florian (103 pounds) won by a major decision in both matches.

Next up for the Flaming Arrows: They'll host an individual tournament on Saturday.

9. Brentwood (13-5, 3-2 League I) — After a pair of League I victories, 40-15 at home against Ward Melville on Wednesday and 34-19 at Patchogue-Medford on Friday, the Indians won the Kris McDonald Islip Cup on Saturday by 72 points over the host Bucs. Eric Orellana was named Champion of Champions after beating Central Islip's Alan Gomex, 6-3, in the 103-pound final.

Next up for the Indians: The League I finale at home against Floyd at 7 p.m. on Friday.

10. Massapequa (10-2, 5-0 Conference 1A) — The Conference 1A champs went 4-1 at the ABC Duals at East Islip on Saturday. They defeated Ward Melville (51-29), Copiague (73-6), East Islip (44-20) and Grand Street Campus (64-14), but dropped a 57-9 decision to Glenn. Joe Doria beat EI's Kenny Risco 7-5 at 96 pounds.

Next up for the Chiefs: They'll be the top seed in the Class A Nassau Duals on Saturday. They take on Herricks in the first round at 9 a.m. at Uniondale.

Wrestlers of the Week

Joshua Duperoy, Central Islip — The 140-pound senior captain earned a 4-0 win over Sachem North's Tyler Itzkowitz to seal the Musketeers' 28-27 win in the last bout on Friday night. 

Nick Falco, East Meadow — The 119-pound senior earned a 9-1 major decision over Seaford's Will Montgomery (a defending Nassau champ) in the Jets' 39-23 win on Saturday at their own dual-meet tournament.
