Blake Comeau is claimed off waivers by Flames
Blake Comeau, who failed to provide any offense for an Islanders team in need of some spark, was claimed off waivers by the Calgary Flames on Friday.
The 25-year-old wing had no points through 16 games (plus three healthy scratches) for the Islanders this season, a significant drop-off from last season when he scored 24 goals.
In adding Comeau, the Flames -- who like the Islanders have struggled offensively -- are responsible for a prorated portion of his $2.5-million salary. The Islanders had signed Comeau to a one-year deal in August.
"Blake is a smart, committed, two-way hockey player who kills penalties, is responsible defensively and can score some goals, as well," Flames general manager Jay Feaster said in a statement. "We have liked this player for a long time, and our scouts and staff are convinced a change is going to be good for him. We are excited to add him to our club without having to give up an asset."
No Nino, Reasoner
Nino Niederreiter, the Islanders' 2010 first-round pick who was called up Nov. 15, was a healthy scratch Friday for the third straight game.
Coach Jack Capuano, speaking before the game, declined to discuss the reasoning behind Niederreiter's recent absence, citing "internal" discussions.
Capuano also does not think the lack of game action will be a hindrance. "He's getting pace in practice and he's getting extra time. I'm not too concerned about that at all at this time."
Marty Reasoner, a veteran free agent signed in the summer, sat out for the second straight game. He's posted only one assist through 18 games.
