John MacLean named Islanders' assistant coach
John MacLean, the former star forward and, briefly, coach for Lou Lamoriello’s Devils, has joined the Islanders as an assistant coach under first-year bench boss Lane Lambert, the team announced on Thursday.
MacLean will take Brian Wiseman’s spot on the staff. Wiseman and former Islander Doug Houda were hired as assistants on July 5, but the Isles said Thursday that Wiseman will not be joining their coaching staff.
MacLean’s son, Kyle, also a forward, has been in the Islanders’ organization since 2020.
John MacLean spent last season as an assistant coach with the San Jose Sharks and has also been an assistant with the Coyotes and Hurricanes. He went 9-22-2 as the Devils coach in 2010-11 before Lamoriello, now the Islanders president and general manager, fired him 33 games into his first season.
He had 413 goals and 429 assists in 1,194 games over 18 seasons for the Devils, Sharks, Rangers and Stars, winning the Stanley Cup with the Devils in 1995.
