John Tavares' second-period goal extended his point streak to 12 games, the longest such streak in the NHL this season.
Tavares entered Saturday night's game with six goals and 13 assists in the first 11 games of the streak, which had been tied with the Bruins' David Krejci for the longest points streak in the league. The 12-game streak is the longest for an Islander since Mark Parrish had a 12-game streak in October-November 2001.
Tavares still has a ways to go to get to the Islanders' record of 25 consecutive games with a point, set by Bryan Trottier during the 1981-82 season.
Paying tribute to dads
The Islanders played possibly their two best games of the season with several of the players' fathers and mentors along in Washington and Philadelphia. Jack Capuano talked in Philly about his own father, Jack Sr., driving the coach, his younger brother Dave and several other New England players, including Flyers coach Peter Laviolette, who played a summer with the Capuano clan on a travel team during college.
"That's why this is so important," Capuano said. "My dad used to drive us everywhere to play. All of these dads did the same thing. It's nice for them to see where their hard work went."
Staios sits againDylan Reese stayed in the lineup on defense and Steve Staios was a healthy scratch for a third straight game. Reese needed a couple of stitches to close a gash on his nose after his fight with Flyers leading scorer Claude Giroux on Thursday . . . D Mike Mottau (concussion) still has not resumed skating . . . G Rick DiPietro had surgery in Boston to repair a sports hernia Tuesday and will be rehabbing soon.
