Sharks send Dany Heatley to Wild for Martin Havlat

A pretty big swap of scorers came over the transaction wire late on Sunday night, the second trade in as many weeks between San Jose and Minnesota -- during the draft, the Sharks sent another pretty good scoring winger, Devin Setoguchi, to the Wild for D Brent Burns and the 28th pick in the draft.

This one is all about clutch performance, as Sharks GM Doug Wilson said. Heatley's production dipped a bit this past regular season, but it was his disappearing game in the playoffs that seemed to seal this deal; Havlat has been a solid playoff performer, even though he left the Hawks the year before they won a Stanley Cup.

Havlat also has the speed that Wilson wants up front, some of which he lost when he shipped out Setoguchi. The Sharks reached the Western Conference final for the second straight season but were wiped out by the Canucks. Wilson saw a need for changes, and he went after them aggressively.

Adding Burns was a solid upgrade; this trade is about even on the talent scale, but more about bringing in a different style of scoring winger.

For the Wild, well, it's a team that doesn't exactly fit its name when it comes to big deals. Minnesota has been content to be a defense-first team since Jacques Lemaire guided the Wild from its inception. With a new coach in Mike Yeo, perhaps this team is trying to keep up with the high-powered elite teams in the West.
