North Carolina women end emotional ride for Virginia
Laura Zimmerman scored four goals as third-seeded North Carolina, in an emotion-filled game, topped No. 6 Virginia, 17-7, in a women's lacrosse NCAA Tournament quarterfinal yesterday in Chapel Hill, N.C.
It was a solemn end for the Virginia women, who are still in mourning over the murder of teammate Yeardley Love.
There was a moment of silence before the game to honor the memory of Love, who was allegedley killed by a member of the men's lacrosse team.
Some players still had a hard time coping with Love's death.
"I don't think that there's any way that you can really move on" from Love's death, senior midfielder Brittany Kalkstein said. "Obviously, it's going to be in our thoughts forever."
Virginia's orange jerseys had black patches on their chests with the word "Love" written in white. Virginia players wore T-shirts that read "One team. One Heart. One Love."
Kristen Taylor and Corey Donohoe each had three goals for North Carolina (17-2). Kaitlin Duff scored three goals for Virginia (14-6). The Tar Heels advance to next week's Final Four in Towson, Md., for the second straight season.
- With APMaryland 15, Pennsylvania 10:Caitlyn McFadden had five goals and three assists and Sarah Mollison had five goals and an assist to lead host and top-seeded Maryland (20-1). Ali DeLuca had three goals for No. 8 Pennsylvania (15-4).
Syracuse 7, James Madison 3:Halley Quillinan had three goals and an assist, Michelle Tumolo two goals and an assist, and Liz Hogan made 12 saves for visiting No. 12 Syracuse (15-6), which outscored JMU 5-0 in the second half. Ariel Lane scored twice for No. 5 JMU (17-3).
Northwestern 18, Duke 8:Danielle Spencer and Erin Fitzgerald each scored four goals for host No. 2 Northwestern (19-1). Lindsay Gilbride, Christie Kaestner and Kat Thomas each had two goals for No. 7 Duke (14-6).
