Virginia men escape in OT
Matt White scored 1:27 into overtime after the seventh-seeded Virginia men's lacrosse team made a dramatic comeback in regulation to beat unseeded Bucknell, 13-12, in a first-round game of the NCAA Tournament Sunday in Charlottesville, Va.
White's second goal came from the right side of goalie Kyle Feeney off a pass from ACC player of the year Steele Stanwick, whose two goals in the final 2:32 forced overtime. The Cavaliers (10-5) next play No. 2 Cornell (14-2) in a quarterfinal at Hofstra on Saturday at noon.
Bucknell (14-3) got three straight goals from Charlie Streep to break a 6-all halftime tie and led 10-6 late in the third quarter before Stanwick's first of three goals pulled Virginia to 10-7.
Virginia played without Huntington natives Shamel (dismissed) and Rhamel Bratton (suspended).
Denver 13, Villanova 10: Sixth-seeded Denver won its first-ever NCAA Tournament game in the first tournament game ever hosted by a team west of the Mississippi. Denver (14-2) trailed at halftime, 7-5, but took over the second half with an 8-3 run. Freshman Jeremy Noble had four goals and two assists. Mark Matthews contributed three goals and an assist. The Pioneers will play No. 3 Johns Hopkins (13-2) at Hofstra on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Unseeded Villanova finishes 11-5.
Maryland 13, North Carolina 6: Drew Snider scored four goals to lead unseeded Maryland past No. 8 North Carolina in a first-round game in Chapel Hill, N.C. Ryan Young added two goals and three assists for the Terrapins (11-4), who never trailed in earning a spot opposite Sunday's Syracuse-Siena winner in a quarterfinal next Sunday at noon. UNC finishes 10-6.
