Ducks Watch: Josh Lansford and Jared Lansford
For Josh Lansford, it was seven seasons, seven teams, several cities, two positions and two selections in the Major League Baseball amateur draft. For Jared Lansford -- seven seasons and eight minor-league stops for two big-league organizations.
It's been a whirlwind baseball tour for the brothers, sons of former major-leaguer and current Colorado Rockies hitting coach Carney Lansford. The reunion came in June when Josh, 28, joined Jared, 25, in the Ducks' bullpen and the two righthanded relievers became teammates for the first time since high school. Now they are, quite literally, brothers in arms.
Most important question: Who would win in a fight?
Jared: "We had some wrestling matches back in the day, but nothing too crazy. He's got some years on me, so I'd give him the advantage, but I've learned some moves."
Josh: "He grew up with me and all my buddies picking on him. We toughened him up pretty good. But I don't want to go down that road now and test him."
What was it like growing up in such a baseball family?
Jared: "My father introduced me to baseball. Growing up pretty much in a baseball clubhouse, it's hard to top. Josh always pushed me to be the best I can and I wanted to follow in their footsteps."
Josh: "In addition to our father, we have two uncles who were first-round draft picks (Joe and Phil Lansford). When Thanksgiving comes around, it's pretty funny to hear all the trash talk that goes around the table. We all mess around with each other. Dad had the 15-year career in the majors, but we've all had our highlights."
Josh had been a third baseman but converted to a relief pitcher in 2008. What happened?
"I was in Double-A [Tennessee Smokies, a Cubs affiliate] and we were getting blown out and were short on pitchers. The manager said, 'Can anyone throw a strike?' I said I could. I went out and my first pitch was a 93-mph fastball for a strike. They called me in and said, 'Aramis Ramirez plays third base . . . We can keep you at third in the minor leagues or let you pitch and have a better chance of making the big leagues.' "
Biggest similarity?
Jared: "We're into the same movies and DVR the same TV shows. We're big into 'Dexter' and 'Sons of Anarchy.' "
What's in your iPods?
Jared: "I like going back and listening to old stuff, some Tom Petty. We’re both into 80s music."
Anything one likes that the other hates?
Josh: “The fact that I'm married and he isn't yet might be the biggest difference. But other than that, personality wise, we're pretty similar."
Jared: “I love Mexican food and Josh can't stand it. He won’t touch anything with beans.”
