Dick Enberg to call Padres games
Speaking of Dick Enberg (see post below), this season he will be the lead TV voice of the Padres, working a full season other than "breaks" to work Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.
Won't that be a grueling schedule for a 75-year-old man?
"I've done it before," he said. "I know I'm not as young as I once was. I realize there will be some 0-for-4s.
" But part of the appeal is having lived half my adult life in San Diego, and in a way you're an ambassador for your city as the broadcaster. I accept that responsibility enthusiastically."
Enberg said his wife is skeptical, wondering whether there will be a hot mid-summer day when Enberg calls from the road and says, "Can you come and take me home?"
(As part of his new gig, Enberg will be off CBS' NFL coverage roster this autumn.)
