Assorted things that got put on the back burner in the wake of George Steinbrenner's passing:

Due to an unfortunate brain cramp, I inaccurately wrote in Tuesday's newspaper that Landon Donovan's dramatic World Cup game-winner came against Slovenia. Not so! It was Algeria, of course.

Speaking of the World Cup, I went back and looked at the analyst predictions ESPN sent before the tournament began. For the record, one man got it exactly right: Efan Ekoku, who had Spain over the Netherlands in the final.

Former Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce joined ESPN as a TV, radio and Internet analyst. Mr. Pierce will follow in the long tradition of retired athletes who become media members after mistreating and/or failing to cooperate with journalists during their playing days. Following the Giants' early playoff exit in the 2008 season he declined to speak to reporters both after the game and the next day. He was a captain at the time.

GQ named the Dodgers' one-man broadcast booth the best in baseball. SNY's three-man entry of Gary Cohen, Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez won the non-Vin Scully division, finishing second overall.

Congratulations to ESPN's Chris Berman, who was named the recipient of this year's Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award by the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
