World Series to go on as planned despite absence of Yankees

Here is a guide I wrote for the Wednesday newspaper for Cablevision customers who would like to watch the World Series beginning tonight.

An interesting discovery I was not previously aware of: postseason.tv, an MLB-sanctioned live video stream that offers eight camera angles and the Fox audio. Cost: $9.95.

Last night I found myself on the flight deck of the Intrepid with Pete Dawkins, the 1958 Heisman Trophy winner and still a big fan of Army football.

The occasion was an event celebrating CBS College Sports' Armed Forces Salute, including a tripleheader Saturday featuring Army, Navy and Air Force. More on that later in the week.

It's difficult to believe now that when I was a kid American soldiers regularly were dissed at home by significant chunks of the populace, but it's true. I don't know what the heck we were thinking.

While attending the event on the Intrepid I was not watching the Heat-Celtics game.

At TNT's preseason luncheon Monday analyst Steve Kerr, a member of the 72-win Bulls team, was asked about the possibility of the Heat winning 72 this season.

"I just don't see it happening," he said. But he added he wouldn't necessarily be rooting against it.

"I don't want to be like Mercury Morris and have a Champagne celebration when they lose their 11th game. It's not about that."

Ten more losses to go!

The NFL ratings juggernaut just keeps rolling along. ESPN said Monday's Giants-Cowboys game was the fourth most-watched scheduled program in cable TV history with 17.95 million viewers. It also was the most-watched cable TV program of this year.

Given what Cliff Lee actually said Tuesday in his pre-World Series news conference and what the Daily News' headline turned it into - "Texas Ace Lee Rips Bronx Thugs" - if I were Mr. Lee I think I'd be more worried about New York's tabloid back pages than about a few drunk yahoos at Yankee Stadium as I weigh my free agency options.

Just sayin'.
