Venus Williams is the highest ranked American with the No. 9 seed.
On the men’s side, defending champion Stan Wawrinka, two-time winner Novak Djokovic, 2014 finalist Kei Nishikori and world No. 11 Milos Raonic are not competing in this year’s U.S. Open.
Serena Williams, who has won six U.S. Open titles, won the Australian Open in January, but missed the French Open and Wimbledon and will miss the U.S. Open. Williams announced in April that she was pregnant.
